Finding the perfect place to walk your dog can make all the difference in your daily routine. Hobart offers a variety of scenic, dog-friendly spots where both you and your furry friend can enjoy fresh air, exercise, and beautiful views. As a local I find the best places to go, and my guide highlights my top five dog walking spots in and around Hobart that combines convenience and natural beauty.

1. Mount Wellington Trails

For dog owners who enjoy a more adventurous walk, the trails on Mount Wellington provide stunning views and varied terrain with several paths allowing dogs on leash.

  • Location: About 20 minutes from Hobart city centre

  • Facilities: Walking trails, lookout points, parking areas and Lost Freght Cafe

  • Best time to visit: Weekdays or early weekends to avoid busy trails

The crisp mountain air and panoramic views of Hobart and the surrounding landscape make this a rewarding spot. Remember to bring water for both you and your dog, as some trails can be steep and challenging.

2. Old Beach Foreshore

Old Beach Foreshore offers a long, flat walking path along the water’s edge. It’s a favourite for locals who want a gentle stroll with their dogs. The natural wildlife who call this area home, adds to the beauty of this trail.

  • Location: Old Beach, 25 minutes north of Hobart city

  • Facilities: Walking path, benches, dog waste bins and 5.0 Espresso Cafe

  • Best time to visit: Anytime during daylight hours

The foreshore’s calm waters and sounds of the various birds creates a relaxing atmosphere. Dogs need to be on lead out of respect to the ducks and other wildlife. Plus with 5.0 Espresso just up the road, you can enjoy a coffee while taking in this beautiful trail.

Clarence Plains Rivulet Trail is a hidden gem for dog walkers looking for a peaceful environment. The hidden trail features a gravel path through a small patch of native bushland following the rivulet, also contains open fields.
